FAQS ON SAFARIS AT KICHWA TEMBO, KENYA

ACCESS

Q:What method of transportation is recommended to reach Kichwa Tembo?
A:Kichwa Tembo is easily accessible by scheduled flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport, followed by a 25-minute road transfer to camp. There are daily international flights from Europe and South Africa to Nairobi. We can pre-book and package all of your regional/internal flights and transfers, and provide a meet and greet service at all airports.

AFRICAN WILDLIFE

Q:What are the characteristic animal species of the area?
A:In addition to the annual Great Migration of hundreds of thousands of animals from Tanzania into the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kichwa Tembo offers excellent year-round game viewing - including elephant, lion, rhino, leopard, buffalo, cheetah, hippo, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, warthog, olive baboon, Thomsons’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, crocodile and 450 bird species.

CHILDREN

Q:Are children welcome?
A:Yes. Children under 11 are warmly welcome at Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp. Regrettably, for safety reasons, children under 11 cannot be accommodated at Bateleur Camp. Recommended age for children on safari in Kenya is eight years and older.

Q:Where can children sleep?
A:An extra bed can be arranged for one child (11 and under) sharing the parents’ tent.

Q:What are the activities available for children?
A:Activities depend entirely on the age of the children and may include the following:
  • Special family game-drives (at the discretion of the lodge manager and subject to availability)
  • Special one-hour children's bush walks within the camp perimeter
  • Planet Manager activity books
  • Special programmes can be compiled such as tracking for children, fishing, frog safaris and birding
  • Children’s meals and menus available
Q:Are babysitting services offered?
A:Babysitting services are offered at Tented Safari Camp at an additional charge.

FOOD

Q:What style and type of meals are on offer?
A:All CC Africa lodges are world-renowned for their delicious Pan-African cuisine – fresh ingredients, simply prepared with an African flavour. All our vegetables are grown in the camp’s shamba (vegetable garden). Visits to the shamba are a highlight for many guests.

Q:Do you cater for specific diets?
A:Yes, all halaal and vegetarian dietary requirements will be catered for. When making your reservation, please advise us of any specific dietary requirements that you may have, and they will be communicated immediately to the camp.. Should specific items need to be flown in, there will be an additional charge, which will be quoted separately. Regrettably, we are unable to cater for strictly kosher guests at Kichwa Tembo.

GUEST SAFETY

Q:Will I be safe?
A:Guest safety is of paramount importance – Askaris (Maasai warrior security guards) monitor animal activity within the camp areas, and escort guests to/from their tented suites at night. There is an electric fence around the camp.

HEALTH

Q:What kind of medical precautions do I need to take?
A:Please consult your physician or health department for the latest health and anti-malarial precautions. Some countries require advance inoculations (and certificates thereof) – we will advise you of these.

Q:How is emergency medical cover and travel insurance arranged?
A:Emergency medical evacuation insurance is included in the rate at all CC Africa lodges. This guarantees all reasonable and practical assistance in obtaining primary or emergency medical services for an insured person who suffers illness or injury. Please note that this is evacuation insurance only and does not replace normal travel insurance. Trained first-aiders are on standby at the camp at all times, and emergency evacuation by air is available.

INTERNET/TELEPHONE FACILITIES

Q:Do you have internet access?
A:Yes. Internet facilities are available at an additional cost.

LAUNDRY SERVICE

Q:Do you have a laundry service?
A:We offer a complimentary laundry service at Bateleur Camp. A laundry service is available at Tented Safari Camp at an additional cost. No dry cleaning facilities are available.

Guest safety is paramount at all times.

SAFARI SEASONS

Q:Which are the best months to visit Kichwa Tembo?
A:Kichwa Tembo offers excellent game viewing throughout the year, and experiences a gentle and warm climate. Daytime temperatures are mild and nights can be fairly cool. Summer extends from October to April, with December to March being the warmest months. All year, minimum temperatures are 11ºC/52ºF and maximum temperatures are 30ºC/86ºF. The cool season is from May to September.

Q:When is the rainy season?
A:Rainfall occurs predominantly in summer (October to April) in the late afternoon or at night. The Masai Mara receives the highest rainfall of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem – an average of 1000mm (39 inches) of rain per year, concentrated in two seasons with the so-called ‘long rains’ from March to June, and the ‘short rains’ from October to December.

Q:When is the best time to see the Great Migration?
A:The Migration is a 12-month cycle and CC Africa has lodges at all major viewing points. Our consultants will advise when and where are the best times. Depending on when the rains come, the Great Migration normally reaches Kenya in July. Hundreds of thousands of herbivores then disperse onto the plains of the Masai Mara for the next couple of months.

WATER

Q:Is the water safe to drink?
A:We do not recommend you drink the tap water. We offer complimentary bottles of mineral water in the rooms and with meals.
